What is your dream internship for your Junior year?
For career day I went to Vista High School and I shadowed two Biology/Chemistry teachers, I really enjoyed going to the school and talking to the teacher and learning the different experiences she had and all the different things you have to do to become a teacher. My day started off by going to the school and checking in, after I checked in they told me the teachers classroom and I went. I went during lunch time so I had time to interview one teacher, her name was Ms.Bechtold. She was truly inspiring and the things she said about teaching had a bigger impact on me. Something that she talked about is that she loves teaching because she loves to get to know her students and she descriptors herself as a mom/cop for her students. I also learned that there are a lot of different circumstances there is to face when your a teacher, that there are moments were its super fun and have good moments, then there are other times were its going to be hard. I learned a lot from her and that there are sometimes going to be obstacles in life but, that we shouldn't let that get in the way of our dreams. I honestly don't think this would be a career I would see myself pursuing, there are some good things about being a teacher you get to have bounds with some of your students and it feels like an accomplishment when you gain there trust and help them out. I wouldn't persue this career because it takes a lot of patience and I really don't have that. The education you need is to get your teachers credential and after that you go teach a class so you basically shadow a teacher. My dream internship is to go out of the country, I want to go to Mexico in a small community clinic, and help people out that I know and make them feel better.
Interview
What inspired you to be a teacher?
When I was in high school the influence of my teachers had a huge impact on me, since I have a disability people really misunderstood me and didn't really think I was going to get this far and become a teacher. So definitely my teachers had a huge impact on me.
What school did you go to?
I went to UCLA and I graduated in 1998
What are some positive and negatives about your job?
I really enjoy my job, I love to get to know the students and helping them out with not only school work but when they have problems at home or when they are in hard situations. When your a teacher you really don't no what to expect or what type of students or situations your going to be put in. I was in one situations when one of my students called me on the phone and told me he wanted to kill himself, and I stayed on the phone with him and told him positive things until his parents got home. Something tragic would've have happened that day if I didn't pick up the phone. You also don't pick your students so if you get ones that are disruptive you have to deal with that.
How long have you been teaching for?
I've been teaching for 12 years , 5 years ate Riverside and 7 years at Vista.
What is the best advice for someone who is planning to peruse this career?
Well get as much experience as you can with different age groups, volunteer as much as you can with teachers or vary in different experiences. I never imaged being a teacher I loved science but then my teachers inspired me to become what I'm now.
