Project Description: For this project we talked about power, privilege, we combined humanities and math to describe our knowledge by using these two subjects. We talked about many topics that are affecting our society, everybody was assigned a role and a topic they had to research. In order to talk about the topics we had a symposiums at the Vista Clinic, each group that was assigned a topic had a symposium where they were allowed to talk about there knowledge to the community. We also learned about the statistics and the percentage and the different types of graphs that represent information about the topic that was given to us.
Questions (Process)
What did you do? How did you create your financial plan, info graphics and other products? How and when did you use the math? How did you go about learning about your selected topic (humanities)? What challenges did you face and how did you resolve any issues you ran into? What parts of the project did you enjoy?
So for this project what I did was be an event organizer, what I did was that I worked with the educational Inequality panel and I was in charge of finding potential community panelist that were worked or have experienced educational inequalities. Another thing we had to do besides that was to design how the area of exhibition was going to look like. For example set up the rooms that the panels were going to be in, how the outside decor was going to look like. Make the panelist comfortable and feel welcomed. Then the night of exhibition everybody was assigned a station which they would rotate every hour. The first thing I did was check in with guest panelist and escorted them to there rooms that they were going to participate in. After that hour was over I went over to one of the sections of the clinic and presented the spoken words that were going on and introduced them and to the audience. After that I was taking care of kids in the day care center we had but since there wasn't a lot of kids we only took care of some before there parents came to pick them up. After that we closed of the exhibition with the closing speaker. The way I created my financial plan was that we combined what we were learning in math about or future, for example what 3 universities we would like to attend and how much we would have to pay. We then learned about student loans and how we would balance that out with our monthly budget. In order to find the amount of money we were saving or waisting we use spreadsheets and created a chart of numbers, then spreadsheet made into a graph and looked at the comparisons. For our info graphics we all used different websites to create our info graphics. We had to include three graphs (we learned about graphs in class) but first we had to find out data that could be turned into graphs, We researched more in depth about the topic and found reliable data and created our info graphics. We used math when it came to our position paper we had to write in humanities class, we used statistics to support what we were arguing about. When I first got assigned educational inequalities I really didn't know much about it I was somewhat upset to get that topic. As I started doing more research I got more into it, then I was shocked with the huge gap that had been formed over the years in education. I mostly faced my challenges in humanities since race is such an controversial topic it was hard for me to discuss about it especially in class, at the same time it got me out of my comfort zone and talk about such a big issues in our society. I really enjoyed all the aspects of the project and how we learned about such heavy subjects that are affecting our society.
Math learning: The financial concept of this project taught me how to budget out my money and how to use it in a wise way. For the tax concept of it I really learned a lot on how to do taxes and its a tool I will be able to use in the future. It was difficult at first to budget out the money you had because you spent it on the most important things and then you use it on more personal things or less useful things. Debt is one of the first things we learned about. What I learned from exponential growth was that in terms of having money in the bank for example the experiential grows, and a decay would be being in debt. Logarithms help you find the exponential value and is the inverse of exponent. Well with the graphs I definitely learned in a visual way a picture can say many things about something also it taught us how to use other forms to get our message across.
Humanities Learning;
This really taught me to be more aware of my surroundings and aware of how privileged I am and to not take that for granted. privilege and the power of society can be a good thing but at the same time its bad, society has many different affects on people, society and the power it has. There are many inequities in society and it really opened up my mind to the privileges I have and sometimes I take that for granted. For example the topic I had to research was educational inequalities, it was amazing how many minorities have unequal education and they say education is the most important tool we have in life to succeed. The inequities that are going on in society doesn't help us grow it only makes our society an environment of negativity. My perspective on the negative dream didn't change, I think that everybody has there own individual way of viewing it and my of seeing it is to make the most out of it in all aspects of life.
Exhibition: Exhibition night was a success, we moved lots of people with the spoken words and all the different activities that they did. We really pushed ourselves to make this a successful exhibitor, we were all really passionate about what we were learning about and that made us knowledgable and also I think it made some of us go out of our comfort zone to talk about these heavy issues that are going on in the society we are living in.
