Project Description: This project was the last 11th grade math project we had. This project allowed us to be in the shoes of architects , surveyors ,engineers and developers. We based our project on the San Marcos Creek project, the project focusses on creating a "downtown" for San Marcos and use available space to create different buildings that will create a "downtown" San Marcos.
Process: The first thing that we did was we got our space that we were in charge of for this project, then we were place with groups of 3-4 people, after that our first assignment was to read about the requirements that had to be put in our area for example the amount of stories a building had to be or what specifically had to be in that area. After researching we went on a small field trip to our area and measured and looked at what was surrounding the area, we got all the measurements and started sketching ideas that we could potential build on this area. After making a few sketches and all coming to an agreement on what our building would look like all of us had either the east , south, west or north side, we had to draw one of these sides. After a round of a few critique from out class member we used something called Adobe illustrator and we created the sketches that we first drew on Adobe Illustrator. After that when we had our final drafts on Adobe Illustrator we laser cut everything onto wood and after that we cut it up and started building or structures.
Math Learning: The different math concepts that we used were Trigonometry, the Golden Ratio and the Sun Path Dial. We used the golden ratio by a golden rectangle means that any shape that can be wholly divided into up into a square and a rectangle that, when connected, make a ratio of 1:1.61, so with the golden ratio we were able to see the balance and height and we were also able to see varying shapes. For the sun path dial we used that to find out where the sun is going to be at, at a certain time of the month or the time of the different seasons.
Reflection and Exhibition: I really thought this project was very interesting, I liked how we were able to be in the shoes of different people that contribute to the different aspects of creating a building. I really liked how everything turned out, the buildings looked very nice once they were all put together. I really like how we used a digital aspect to create the building. For exhibition I really liked how the whole 11th grade was together in two rooms it made it feel more interesting and it really did look like San Marcos. It made it look like a potential Downtown San Marcos. I really like how we had different interactive activities and how we were all together presenting about a project that we took a long time to work on.
